The Wasp Nest

Wasp nests are fascinating structures created by wasps primarily for housing their young. They begin with a single queen wasp, who starts building the nest using chewed wood fibers mixed with saliva to create a paper-like substance. As the nest grows, the queen lays eggs, and worker wasps emerge to help expand the nest and care for the larvae Over time, these nests can become quite large, housing thousands of wasps.

There are many variations in the characteristics of the nests within the wasp  species. Aerial nests and nests that are very close to the surface of the ground have much thicker envelopes than those under the ground. Because heat is less well insulated above the ground, the wasps build thick envelopes to prevent heat from escaping. Also smaller nests have thicker envelopes than larger nests. This is mainly due to the fact that the amount of heat produced is proportional to the volume of the nest. The larger a nest is the better it will be in conserving the nest warmth. The optimal temperature of the nest is around 32 °C. However, when the temperature rises above the optimal temperature the workers use their wings as fans to cool the nest down. Trying to knock down the nest or using other methods can backfire and you end up under attack.

The  Queen  Wasp

The Queen wasp plays a crucial role in the survival and structure of the entire nest, making her the most important member of the colony. efficiently larger than the female workers and the males, as drones, she stands out as the largest wasp in the colony. Her primary purpose in life is to lay eggs, ensuring the continuation of her species. Interestingly, only female wasps, including the Queen, possess st, which they use exclusively for self-defense against potential threats. As the days begin to warm up in spring, the Queen wasps from their hibernation, having spent the in a deep sleep to conserve energy. At this time, there are no active wasp nests, just the solitary Queens seeking a suitable location to establish their colonies. They meticulously scout the perfect site to build their nests, which ultimately become bustling hubs of activity. When winter returns, typically between October and November, wasp nest collapses and both the new and old Queen wasps take flight find safe places to h until the warmth of spring calls them back into action. This cycle of life is essential for the ongoing existence of wasps, the Queen's vital role in the ecosystem.
